SO.CO.SHORT IN THE THERAPY OF INFLAMMATORY PAIN

INTRODUCTION
The So.Co.Short device is a non-invasive electro-medical device that offers an innovative therapeutic approach
painful pathologies in which the essential component is represented by inflammation, alterations of the microcirculation e
muscle contractures. Its operation is based on the generation of pulses with variable frequency, duration and intensity,
conveyed to the patient by trans-cutaneous route by means of electrodes placed near the area to be treated.
The purpose of the study is to evaluate whether the use of the So.Co.Short device is effective in a multimodal approach to
treatment of painful inflammatory pathologies and / or can represent a valid therapeutic alternative in the presence
of contraindications to drug treatment.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
In our retrospective observational study, 630 patients were evaluated between June 2012 and June 2014
subjected to a cycle of 10 sessions of Tension Pulse Therapy (So.Co.Short) at the Pain Medicine HUB of
PTV “Tor Vergata” Polyclinic Foundation. All patients evaluated were suffering from an acute or inflammatory process
chronic of joint and / or vascular origin and reported pain of intensity> 4 on the NRS scale before the treatment cycle
(Numerical Rating Scale). The patients were not taking analgesic drugs or were being treated with drugs of the scale
WHO analgesic at fixed dosages for the duration of the So.Co.Short cycle.
The intensity of pain was assessed using Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) at the beginning (T0) and at the end (T1) of the cycle of 10
sessions and in a follow-up (T2) within 45 days of the last So.Co.Short session.
RESULTS
At follow-up T2 patients confirmed the mean NRS value obtained at the end of the cycle and in addition reported a
improvement of joint function or any ulcerative lesions in the treated area.
CONCLUSIONS
Using So.Co.Short treatment has produced a significant response in pain control, allowing many
patients to reduce the dosage of analgesic drugs in use and proving to be a valid therapeutic alternative for those
patients who were not taking pain medication.
In addition, the use of the So.Co.Short device was effective in reducing motor limitation by influencing
positively physical disability and psychological discomfort deriving from it, and in some pathologies it has slowed the progression
of tissue lesions, with a reduction in the use of more invasive interventions.
All patients demonstrated excellent compliance with treatment and no side effects were ever recorded
unwanted.
